Frequently Asked Questions
Here are a list of some of the most common questions we are most often asked. Feel free to email or call us if you could not find the answer to your question below.
Why should I get an EV charge point installed in my home?
While it is possible to charge your car with a 3-pin plug, it’s slow and more expensive to run. Charging an electric car requires a high and consistent electric current hence a standard socket is not suitable over a long period of time. Our supplied 7kw devices will comfortably charge your car overnight.
The prices shown are for typical installation, what does this mean?
Typical installation includes the cost of a 7kw charger with a cable run of 10 meters (in other words the cable needs to be within 10 meters of the fuse board). The wiring in the property must be in compliance with current wiring regulations. It also assumes that correct electrical connections and protections are available on the property, and that no civil works are required. We will happily arrange a free site survey if you have any doubt.
Can I connect an EV charge point to an externally insulated wall?
Yes, absolutely! Our full trained and insured installation team can advise you on this but we have installed charging points on many externally insulated walls.
My car is supplied with an EV charger, can CarPlug.ie install this charger?
Yes, simply get in touch with us via our contact page or click the button above to email or call us directly and we can advise on an ‘installation only’ price.
Can I charge a Plug-in Hybrid car?
Yes, our chargers charge both Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV’s) and Electric Vehicles (EV’s).
Does CarPlug.ie need access to my property?
Yes, we will need someone at the property, however we will arrange a time that will suit you. The length of time for installation is typically 3 hours.
How do I pay for my EV charger and installation?
You can pay us on site once installation has been completed by credit/debit card. If you wish to do a bank transfer it must be done through the office prior to installation.
I live in an apartment, can I install an EV charger?
It’s certainly possible but a bit more complex. We can offer a number of solutions depending on whether you own the apartment and car space, or rent it. Feel free to contact us and we will be able to discuss further.
How do I know if I qualify for the SEAI grant?
The SEAI grant available to home owners is €600. Any private owner who buys an eligible EV from 01/01/2018 may apply.
The EV must be parked on an off-street location associated with your home and the charger must be connected back to the fuse board of the applicants property. The property can not be associated with a previous EV grant e.g ESB Ecars – grant pre 2018.
It is important that you apply for the grant and have the ‘letter of offer’ BEFORE work commences on installation, otherwise you will not receive the grant support. If you have any queried you can email or call us here at CarPlug.ie and we will happily assist you.
